　　托福和SAT考試中，有很多與“火”有關的詞匯，這些單詞在每次的文章閱讀中，總是經(jīng)常出現(xiàn)。

　　在今天的故事中，我們將會講解“燃燒” (burning)，“點燃” (light) 和“熄滅” (put out) 這三個意群。

　　1. 火總是在“燃燒”的時候出現(xiàn)，而“燃燒”除了可以用 burning 表示，還可以說combustion. 這個單詞重在描述物品的燃燒過程。

　　例如：The energy is released by combustion on the application of a match. 火柴點燃之后，在燃燒過程中會釋放能量。

　　The two principal combustion products are water vapor and carbon dioxide. 兩種主要的燃燒產(chǎn)物是水蒸氣和二氧化碳。

　　combustion 的形容詞形式是 combustible，它的意思是“可以燃燒的”，

　　例如：The ability of coal to release a combustible gas has long been known. 人們早已知道煤可以釋放一種易燃氣體。

　　2. 如果想讓東西燃燒，就需要將它點燃�！包c燃”既可以用 kindle 表示，也可以用 ignite 來描述。

　　例如：I came in and kindled a fire in the stove. 我進來把爐子點著了。

　　The bombs ignited a fire which destroyed some 60 houses. 炸彈引發(fā)的大火燒毀了大約60 棟房屋。

　　kindle和 ignite 除了表示“點燃”，還可以引申之后表示“激起某種感情”，這時，它與 rouse 和 inspire 是同義詞。

　　例如，These poems have helped kindle the imagination of generations of children. 這些詩激發(fā)了一代又一代孩子的想象力。

　　所以后來，kindle 成為了亞馬遜 (Amazon) 的一款電子書產(chǎn)品，希望通過這種方式，激發(fā)大家的學習熱情。

　　3. 作為 kindle 和 ignite 的反義詞，extinguish 表示“熄滅”，正因為有了extinguish，才會有extinct (滅絕) 的結局。

　　例如：They tried to extinguish the flames. 他們竭力要把火焰撲滅。

　　大家會把 extinguish 和 distinguish 混淆了嗎? 前者 extinguish 表示“熄滅”，而后者 distinguish 表示“分辨”，同義詞是discern.

　　除了extinguish，douse 也可以達到把火“熄滅”的結果，但是，douse 通常強調(diào)“用水澆滅”，

　　例如：The pumps were started and the crew began to douse the fire with water. 水泵開動了，消防隊員們開始用水滅火。
