什么是英語慣用語呢?它們有哪些類別呢?

　　所謂慣用語(idiomatic expressions)，顧名思義，就是兩個或兩個以上的字合組而成一個固定短語，具有個固定意思，有時，如片語動詞，還可能有一個以上的含義。

　　英語常見慣用語有七種如下：

　�、迤�語動詞(phrasal verbs)，如：

　�、賢urn down：拒絕;②turn up：出現(xiàn);③take after：長得像 ……;④put off：延期;⑤put up with：忍受;⑥do away with：取消、廢除;⑦go back on：食言;⑧zero in on：將注意力集中在 ……

　�、娼樵~短語(prepositional phrases)，如：

　�、賗n a nutshell：總而言之;②by leaps and bounds：很迅速地;③with open arms：熱烈地;④under the weather：不舒服; ⑤from time to time：偶爾;⑥of one's own free will：自愿地;⑦by degrees：漸漸地;⑧on one's own：獨(dú)自;⑨without fail ：一定;⑩in high spirits：精神奕奕地。

　　㈢動詞短語(verb phrases)，如：

　�、賞luck up courage：鼓起勇氣;②get to the bottom of…… ：查詢到底;③ hold the fort：代人盡責(zé);④waste one's breath ：浪費(fèi)氣力;⑤close one's eyes to……：熟視無睹;⑥come in handy：會有用處;⑦go without saying：不說便知;⑧l(xiāng)ose track of：失去蹤跡。

　　㈣名詞短語(noun phrases)，如：

　�、� a bird's eye view of……：概覽;② a bolt from the blue：晴天霹靂;③ Achilles' heel：人性上的一個弱點(diǎn);④ child's play：輕而易舉的事;⑤ food for thought：可供思考的事;⑥ a flash in the pan：曇花一現(xiàn);⑦a feast for the eyes ：賞心悅目事;⑧ the rat race：激烈的競爭。

　�、樾稳菰~短語(adjective phrases)，如：

　　① bent on……：決心……;② susceptible to……：易于…… ;③devoid of……：缺乏……;④conducive to……：有助于……; ⑤comfortably off：富裕的;⑥ busy with……：忙于……;⑦ second to none：最佳的;⑧serious of purpose：認(rèn)真的。

　　㈥“三合一”短語，如：

　�、� ways and means：各種方法;② aches and pains：各種疼痛;③ law and order：法規(guī);④ odds and ends：零星雜品;⑤ make or break：不成功就失敗;⑥ give and take：亦取亦舍、互相忍讓;⑦ forgive and forget：既往不咎;⑧ hale and hearty ：健壯的;⑨free and easy：自由自在的;⑩ here and there：各處;11 safe and sound：安然無恙的;12 now and then：偶爾。

　�、氤烧Z/諺語(proverbs/ maxims)，如：

　　① more haste, less speed：欲速不達(dá);② man proposes, God disposes：謀事在人，成事在天;③ strike while the iron is hot：打鐵趁熱;④ easy come, easy go：易得易失;⑤ time flies：光陰飛快;⑥ prevention is better than cure：預(yù)防勝過治療;⑦ never say "die"：永不言“休”;⑧ the early bird catches the worm：早起的鳥兒有蟲吃。

　　在這七種慣用語中，㈠-㈤數(shù)目多又好用，片語動詞尤為特出，不論是口語或書寫，都很適合。第七類，流傳已久，耳熟能詳，宜于適當(dāng)時刻使用。第六類出現(xiàn)的時間較遲，數(shù)量較少，但是很有用，頗受歡迎。
