if you smoke and still don’t believe that there is a definite link between smoking and bronchial t roubles , hea rt disease , and lung cancer , then you are ce rtainly deceiving yourself . whenever the s ubject of smoking and health is raised , the governments of most count ries hea r no evil , see no evil and smell no evil . in britain , for instance , cigar ette adve rtising has been banned on tv . the con science of the nation is appeased while the population continues to puff its way to smoky , cancerous death .
if the governments of the wor ld wer e honestly conce rned about the welfar e of their peoples , you’d think they’d conduct aggr es sive anti-smoking campaigns . fa r from it ! t he tobacco indust ry is allowed to spend huge s ums on adve rtising . the adver tisements s uggest it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy ! smoking is as sociated with the gr eat open-air life , with beautiful gir ls , t rue love and togethernes s .
so i suggest that gove rnments begin by banning all cigaret te and tobacco advertising and then conduct anti-smoking adve rtising campaigns of their own . smoking should be banned in all public a reas like theat res , cinemas and restaurants . great effor ts s hould be made to inform young people especially of the dir e consequences of t aking up the habit . a hor - rific warning — say , a picture of a death’s head — should be included in every packet of cigar ettes tha t is sold . as individuals we ar e cer tainly weak , but if gove rnments acted honestly and courageou sly , they could protect us from our selves .
