　　清朝末期，雕刻精美、描繪華麗的折扇大量在中國廣東生產(chǎn)，后被西方商人青睞。運往歐洲和美國后成為西方貴婦的重要時尚配件(accessories)。中國折扇的材質(zhì)多為鏤雕精巧的象牙、珍珠貝殼、漆木(lacquer)。扇面上描繪了眾多清朝官員及夫人的形象。因為具有神秘的東方情調(diào)，當時西方中上層貴婦人手一把，以此來炫耀自己的財富和高貴。

　　During the late Qing Dynasty, a large number of Chinese fans exquisitely carved and gorgeouslypainted were produced in Canton (now called Guang dong). These fans later were in goodgraces of western merchants. After they were shipped to Europe and America, they becamefashionable accessories for noblewomen. The materials used to make Chinese fans were mostlyexquisitely carved ivory, pearls and shells and lacquer. These Chinese fans showed manyfigures of Mandarins and their consorts.
