　　A:今天是什么特別的日子嗎?你知道我天天經(jīng)過的那個(gè)中學(xué)吧?今天早晨上班路上，我看見那個(gè)中學(xué)附近有好多警察，感覺是有點(diǎn)異常哦。好多學(xué)生家長都擠在校門口等著，很焦急的樣子。發(fā)生什么事兒了?

　　B: Oh, today is the day for Gaokao. Do you know the Chinese Gaokao? It's the National College Entrance Examination, which takes place once a year in June. This high school is one of the sites where the Gaokao is taking place. It's a very important day for Chinese families with high school graduates. Every year on this day, there are police here to maintain order, and work on construction sites nearby must stop to reduce noise. Some parents even book rooms in hotels nearby the day before just to make sure their children can get a good rest before the exam and can get to the site quickly the next day.

　　B: I know that school you mentioned. It’s called Maotanchang High School. It’s well known nationwide. It attracted more than 10,000 students for Gaokao training last year. In China, many people believe that the Gaokao can make or break young people. So parents all hope their children will get good results in the examination. They will do everything they can to help their children get into good universities.

　　A:為什么高考競爭這么激烈?在中國難道就沒有更好的辦法讓學(xué)生接受大學(xué)教育?這么多學(xué)生為了一次考試苦讀整整一年，這對他們和他們的家庭來說，太不容易了。

　　B: Well, this is China. The Gaokao is not perfect, but it is the most strictly regulated and transparent examination system in China. For hundreds of millions of Chinese youngsters, it is the fairest and most effective way of getting a college education, regardless of one's family background.
