　　A:Gross domestic product, commonly known as GDP, is an important index for a country’s economic performance. It’s the indicator a lot of people look at every three months to see how the economy’s doing. So when was the time during which GDP became so valuable?

　　B.現(xiàn)代意義上的GDP形成于二戰(zhàn)之后。GDP—直都擅長(zhǎng)衡量工廠不斷增加的產(chǎn)值，這些工廠大規(guī)模生產(chǎn)的消費(fèi)品，傳播到了整個(gè)西方世界。很多人都能感受到這種變化，我們家買了臺(tái)電視，收看了登月轉(zhuǎn)播;后來(lái)安了電話、集中供暖，再后來(lái)買了車。

　　A:No wonder GDP was hailed as one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century. However, many economists and policy makers increasingly think it’s no longer enough to just look at GDP because it’s often mistaken for welfare. What’s your take on that?

　　B:對(duì)于皮鞋這種大規(guī)模生產(chǎn)的產(chǎn)品來(lái)說(shuō)，GDP是一個(gè)非常有用的指標(biāo)，但是這些鞋子是一個(gè)樣子還是各不相同，GDP是看不出來(lái)的�？蓡�(wèn)題在于，人們?cè)絹?lái)越關(guān)心產(chǎn)品的多樣性了，也就是定制化個(gè)性化的產(chǎn)品，這些都是無(wú)形的，在GDP中體現(xiàn)不了。

　　A:Lately I’ve been reading a book on the history of GDP that points out several of its shortcomings. What struck me most is that if a natural disaster occurred, like an earthquake, a wild fire or a flood，then that’s actually great for GDP because of the huge investment for rebuilding the disaster-stricken areas that goes on afterwards.

　　B:是的，這個(gè)矛盾由來(lái)己久了。GDP不會(huì)計(jì)入這些財(cái)產(chǎn)損失和受災(zāi)群眾因此遭受的損失。此外，在生產(chǎn)今天的消費(fèi)品時(shí)，我們消耗了大量自然資源，所以就有寅吃卯糧的風(fēng)險(xiǎn)，實(shí)際上現(xiàn)在消耗的是未來(lái)的資本，影響的是未來(lái)的消費(fèi)。

　　A:With the economy getting more digitized, innovation accelerated and intangible services more abundant, GDP alone is not enough to measure the prosperity and progress in the society and economy. So what would be on your dashboard of indicators, other than GDP? Human capital, natural resources and the like, right?

　　B:是的，我們應(yīng)該關(guān)注那些在高(GDP)增長(zhǎng)年代被忽視的東西，也就是人們過(guò)上理想生活必不可少的一些資本。錢是一方面，另一方面是經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家所稱的人力資本。除此以外，還有基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施、自然資源。最后還有社會(huì)資本，這是一個(gè)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)術(shù)語(yǔ)，是指你的社區(qū)是否有能力做出良好集體決策。

　　A:So this book is reminding us what’s really important. Though irreplaceable, GDP is not impeccable.
