The IMF, also known as the Fund, was conceived at a UN conference in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, United States, in July 1944. The 44 countries at that conference sought to build a framework for economic cooperation to avoid a repetition of the competitive devaluationsthat had contributed to the Great Depression of the 1930s.

　　國際貨幣基金組織簡稱“基金組織”，是于1944年7月在美國新罕布什爾州布雷頓森林召開的一次聯(lián)合國會(huì)議上構(gòu)想建立的。參加此次會(huì)議的44個(gè)國家試圖建立一個(gè)經(jīng)濟(jì)合作框架，避免再次出現(xiàn)加劇了20世紀(jì)30年代大蕭條的競爭性貨幣貶值。

　　The IMF's primary purpose is to ensure the stability of the international monetary system—the system of exchange rates and international payments that enables countries (and their citizens) to transact with each other.

　　基金組織的主要宗旨是確保國際貨幣體系，即各國(及其公民)相互交易所依賴的匯率體系及國際支付體系的穩(wěn)定。

　　The IMF is accountable to its member country governments. At the top of its organizational structure is the Board of Governors, consisting of one governor and one alternate governor from each member country, usually the top officials from the central bank or finance ministry.

　　基金組織對成員國政府負(fù)責(zé)。其組織結(jié)構(gòu)的最高層次是理事會(huì)，由每個(gè)成員國的一位理事和一位副理事組成，通常來自中央銀行或財(cái)政部。

　　The Board of Governors meets once a year at the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings. Twenty-four of the governors serve on the International Monetary and Financial Committee, or IMFC, which advises the Board on the supervision and management of the international monetary and financial system.

　　理事會(huì)每年在基金組織/世界銀行年會(huì)之際開會(huì)一次。 國際貨幣與金融委員會(huì)由24位理事組成，通常每年舉行兩次會(huì)議。

　　The day-to-day work of the IMF is overseen by its 24-member Executive Board, which represents the entire membership and is guided by the IMFC and supported by the IMF staff. The Managing Director is the head of the IMF staff and Chair of the Executive Board and is assisted by four Deputy Managing Directors.
