In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone call made after 11 :00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a mater of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

　　【譯文】在美國(guó)，人們通常不在清早打電話給別人。如果你在早晨別人刮臉或吃早餐的時(shí)候打電話來(lái)，那就意味著你有非常重要而緊急的事請(qǐng)。晚上11點(diǎn)之后打來(lái)電話也一樣。人們?cè)谒�覺(jué)的時(shí)間接到電話時(shí)就會(huì)以為發(fā)生了生死攸關(guān)的事。打電話所選擇的時(shí)間表示事情的重要程度。

　　In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life. For example, if people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U. S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, for it would be too impolite. Even a person who is five minutes late is expected to make a short apology.

　　【譯文】時(shí)間在社會(huì)生活中作用重大。在美國(guó)，如果僅僅提前三四天接到宴會(huì)的邀請(qǐng)，人們會(huì)覺(jué)得自己不夠受重視。但并不是所有的國(guó)家都是這樣。在其他國(guó)家，人們會(huì)覺(jué)得提早很多天就預(yù)定約會(huì)的做法很愚蠢，因?yàn)橐恢芤院竽骋惶斓挠?jì)劃很有可能被忘掉。在不同的地區(qū)，時(shí)間有不同的意義。因此，來(lái)自時(shí)間觀念不同的兩種文化氛圍中的人之間就會(huì)產(chǎn)生誤解。比如：美國(guó)社會(huì)崇尚迅捷。人們會(huì)覺(jué)得辦事不夠迅速的人沒(méi)有禮貌或不夠負(fù)責(zé)。在美國(guó)，人們無(wú)法想象讓生意伙伴等上一個(gè)小時(shí)，那簡(jiǎn)直太失禮了。人們覺(jué)得即使只遲到了五分鐘，也應(yīng)該簡(jiǎn)短地表示歉意。
