炎黃子孫
Descendants of Yandi and Huangdi
民族把黃帝和炎帝看作自己的祖先。民族的子孫不管遷徙到哪里，都把自己稱為炎黃子孫，看作同一血統(tǒng)傳下來的。即使到了外國定居，他們的子孫也希望有機會回中國尋根。
The Chinese nation regard Yandi and Huangdi as their ancestors. No matter where they have moved, the Chinese always regard themselves as descendants of Yandi and Huangdi by the same blood relationship. Even after they have settled down abroad, their offsprings hope to have the opportunity to go back to China for their roots.
中國有許多姓氏，為了說明自己是炎黃子孫，他們的族譜往往要追溯到炎黃二帝上頭去。比如，中國姓張的人有一億多，現(xiàn)存的張氏族譜就有軒轅黃帝第五子賜姓張氏的記載。
The Chinese people have numerous surnames; in order to show that they are descendants of Yandi and Huangdi, on their clan pedigree the family line often traces back to Yandi or Huangdi. For instance, there are over 100 million people whose surnames are Zhang, and some existing pedigrees of the Zhang families recorded that the surname of Zhang was granted by the fifth son of Huangdi.
血濃于水，炎黃子孫具有巨大的凝聚力。依靠海內(nèi)外炎黃子孫的共同努力，大地一定會建設(shè)得更加美麗，更加富強。(204 字)
Blood is thicker than water. The descendants of Yandi and Huangdi have tremendous internal cohesion. Through cooperative efforts of the descendants of Yandi and Huangdi inside and outside China, China will surely be built into a more beautiful and more prosperous land.
提示
1.炎黃子孫、民族、中國人民、中國人，在很多情況下所指的對象是一樣的，都是the Chinese people，但是這些說法在側(cè)重點、語氣、感情色彩等方面還是有所區(qū)別的，翻譯中如果都譯成the Chinese people 或the Chinese nation，就會失去很多東西，特別是上面第二個句子里的“炎黃子孫”要是也譯成the Chinese people，話就不通了。
2.“炎帝”的譯名是Yandi，“黃帝”可以譯成Huangdi 或the Yellow Emperor，由于“軒轅”是他的名字，所以還可譯成Xuanyuan Huangdi，但不管譯成什么，必須全文譯法一致，否則前面是Huangdi，后面是Xuanyuan Huangdi，就好像變成兩個人了。
3.“軒轅黃帝第五子賜姓張氏”可以有兩種理解，一種是“軒轅黃帝第五子”把“張”這個姓賜給別人，另一種是他被賜姓張。在有條件的情況下，應(yīng)該查一查有關(guān)資料以確定哪一種理解是正確的。下面這個譯文取的是第一種理解，但第二種似更為合理。
4.“族譜”如果一時找不到合適的詞，可以試一試釋意的辦法。
說明1.“族譜”還可用genealogy，如果用釋意的辦法，可以說the historical record of their family tree，或者更為靈活的many Chinese people trace their family trees back to. . . 等。切不可拘泥。曾有學(xué)生照搬漢英詞典，把它譯成不無滑稽的their pedigree of a clan。
2.“現(xiàn)存的……就有……的記載”這是漢語說法，如果硬套這個結(jié)構(gòu)，譯成in the existing. . .here is the record that. . .(or: . . .the record of/ about. . .)就太生硬了。
